Resurrection Vintage is excited to present Outcasts And Innocents: Photographs Of The Northwest, by photographer Alice Wheeler with a forward by Kathleen Hanna. Outcasts and Innocents: Photographs of the Northwest brings together three decades of photographs by Alice Wheeler, made in and about a region complicated to define through anything other than its elemental landscape. This book is highly collectible and currently out-of-print. All copies are "new-old stock" that have been stored and maintain original cellophane wrapping, and are in excellent "new old stock" vintage condition.
Occupied by its indigenous peoples as well as waves of pioneers, the Northwest has long fostered a sense of opportunity and isolation, and Alice Wheeler’s subjects‚ whether girl bands or anarchists, teen punks or princesses‚ embody both. Internationally known for photographs of Nirvana, Bikini Kill, and the punk-feminist bands of Riot Grrl, Wheeler has always been drawn to people who possess their own definitions of strength and beauty.
Hers are the lesser-seen realities of Seattle’s recent history: not the scrubbed-up coffeehouse earnestness represented in films and sitcoms, but the glory of the drag scene; the devastation of AIDS; the freedom of choice celebrated at Hempfest, gay pride parades, and protest rallies; and yes, a music scene that continues to captivate music lovers internationally.
With a unique vision that reflects her empathy, curiosity and alternative viewpoint, often blurred (literally) by the low light and ever-present rain, Wheeler witnesses the emergence of contemporary Northwest culture.
This is the first monograph of her work.
Alice Wheeler has been living—and making photographs—in the Pacific Northwest for over thirty years. Her photography explores youth culture, music, memory, and identity, and has been influenced by her friendships with musicians and artists, as well as the culture, geographical isolation and climate of the region.
KATHLEEN HANNA is a New York City-based artist, best known for her groundbreaking performances as a member of the 90’s punk band, Bikini Kill, and her multimedia group, Le Tigre. She has known Alice Wheeler since the early days of their careers. The Punk Singer, a documentary about her life, premiered at festivals and saw a nationwide theatrical release.
